The Mirak Class

Our Story

After our founder, Averie Harris visited Haiti for the first time in December of 2018 she knew the Lord was calling her to work in Haiti. She was broken-hearted over the lack of education available for special needs students. Over the last three years, she had spent so much time praying over the direction God was leading her in. In the summer of 2021 she spent 6 weeks in Haiti putting on a summer camp for students with disabilities. After the progress we saw the parents and teachers begged for this program to continue for the students. We were so excited to announce that our class will continue alongside a local school in the village so these kiddos can keep learning. Our current goals for the students include learning their ABCs, numbers, and essentially life skills.   Today, the Mirak Class provides year-round education for these students an annual Summer camp to help these and other students with skill retention.

The Kids

Anicia Fleurimond

Anicia (NiNi)  is 5 years old is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. She lives at the Home of Hope Orphanage. NiNi was the first child our founder, Averie met in Haiti with special needs. You could say she is the reason we exist. NiNi is strong-willed and passionate about getting her way. She wiggles her way into your heart with all the hugs and kisses. NiNi loves to lead the other orphanage kids in bible study and sing them songs. If you ask her who's in charge she'll tell you she is.

EzÈckiel Parent

Ezèckiel is 11 years old and is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. He lives with his parents where his dad runs a school. Even though he lives on a school campus he wasn't attending school until we started our program. All though he can be stubborn we have seen huge progress in him and can't wait to see what the future holds for Ezèckiel. He likes to act all cool so you will rarely see a picture of him looking at the camera or smiling.

Miveline Otilien

Miveline is 8 years old and is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. She lives with her mama who loves and cares for her. Miveline is the. dancing queen you all loved seeing this summer. She put on a show for us every single morning while we were waiting to get the day started. She keeps us on our toes and is very mischievous. She loves to make everyone laugh, but watch you back because there is no telling what she actually has planned. Mivline has made so much progress and we can't wait to see what all she is going to accomplish.

Samuel Pierre

Samual is 8 years old and diagnosed with Down Syndrome. He lives with his family in the village. He is the sweetest little guy you have ever met. He is shy at first but once he warms up to you he will be your best friend. On the first day of our summer program he ran away crying. After just 2 weeks he would be the first one every day running and jumping with excitement.  He greets us every morning with hugs and kisses and we are here for it. His hugs can turn around any bad day. He loves to play, learn, and explore all of our motor skill activities.

Winixsion

The Teachers

Shelda is 26 years old. She has one little boy named Ryan who is 1 year old. She also cares for two children, Rose  who is 10 years old and Remi who is 4. Remi was found laying under a tree and in critical care by Kathy Cadden. After Kathy returned to the state Shelda welcomed these two kiddos into her home to love like her own. Shelda says the reason she likes working with the kids is because "I love children and I loves teaching them. I enjoy working with the kids because they are so special!!

Mackendy Casseus. He is 22 years old and has worked as a teacher in the past and we are so excited to have him with us. In his free time he likes to hangout with my friends and read the bible a lot and think about how we can better help the special kids. He enjoys working with the kids because the bible says in Romans 15 “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up”. He loves to teach because he enjoys seeing the kids learn a new concept and watch them have those light bulb moments.
